ColdFusion Markup Language , more commonly known as CFML , is a scripting language for web development that runs on the JVM , the .NET framework, and Google App Engine . Multiple commercial and open source implementations of CFML engines are available, including Adobe ColdFusion , Lucee , New Atlanta BlueDragon (who offer both a Java-based and a .NET-based version), Railo , and Open BlueDragon as well as other CFML server engines .

In its simplest form, like many other web scripting languages, CFML augments standard HTML files with database commands, conditional operators , high-level formatting functions , and other elements to produce web applications . [1] [2] CFML also includes numerous other constructs including ColdFusion Components (CFCs), CFML's version of objects , that allow for separation of business logic from presentation.

The pages in a CFML application include the server-side CFML tags and functions in addition to HTML tags, and modern CFML applications also tend to have CFCs that are accessed by the CFML pages for executing business logic. When a web browser requests a page in a ColdFusion application, it is automatically pre-processed by the ColdFusion application server . [3]

The ColdFusion Application Server runs as a multi- threaded process that provides a runtime environment for application logic and dynamic page generation. You usually develop ColdFusion applications as a package of scripted pages that might have other components such as COM. When a browser requests a page in a ColdFusion application, ColdFusion Server processes the scripting in the page, interacts with other components, connects with back-end systems, and dynamically generates the HTML page that is returned to the browser.

ColdFusion supports native integration with various technologies, including ODBC-compliant databases, OLE DB, email through POP and SMTP, Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), file servers through native file system support and FTP, and distributed objects through COM and Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB). The Enterprise version of ColdFusion includes Common Object Resource Broker Architecture (CORBA) and native database drivers.

The ColdFusion programming environment centers on an intuitive, tag-based, server scripting language called the ColdFusion Markup Language (CFML). CFML controls the application logic, back-end integration, and dynamic page generation. CFML features tight integration with HTML, structured exception handling, regular expressions, and easy expansion with COM, CORBA, and C/C++.

If you're embarking on learning ColdFusion then you undoubtedly have an interest in applications that are Web (shorthand for World Wide Web ) based. ColdFusion is built on top of the Internet (and the Web), so before getting started, a good understanding of the Internet and related technologies is a must.

There is no need to introduce you to the Internet and the Web. The fact that you're reading this book is evidence enough that these are important to you (as they should be). The Web is everywhere—and Web site addresses appear on everything from toothpaste commercials to movie trailers to cereal boxes to car showrooms. In August 1981, 213 hosts (computers) were connected to the Internet. By the turn of the millennium that number had grown to about 100 million! And most of them are accessing the Web.
